the first 2 shops in killingworth in 1960s moore s , small confectionery shop, situated between garth 6 , angus close , adjacent west house pub, these shops demolished in 1970s.

the shopping centre included dewhurst butchers, greggs bakery , newsagents, demolished in 1980s. puffing billy pub built on bridge on road.


in 1980s , 1990s, morrisons shopping complex (containing morrisons supermarket) became commercial centre, while former woolco site stood wasteland more decade. in 2000s, killingworth centre, modern shopping mall, built there. morrisons moved new purpose-built store. premises vacated morrisons occupied matalan.


in 2010, new kfc , public house ( shire horse ) constructed next mcdonald s in killingworth centre.


white swan centre

the white swan large white building in town centre. owned merz & mclellan , built in 1960s. contains 100,000 square feet (10,000 m) of office space , employed 600 professional , clerical people. constructed northumberland county council, building towered on killingworth.


over years, office space became vacant and, former woolco site, disused through 1990s. building reduced in height, remodernised, reopened , renamed white swan centre. name white swan chosen suggestions provided local school children , reflects swans found on local lake. white swan centre built house local services provided in demolished buildings had been attached high-level shopping precinct. example, doctors surgery , library , small gym housed in white swan centre swimming pool , sports centre had been demolished. new lakeside swimming pool , sports centre built alongside lake next george stephenson high school.
