the island stratovolcano basaltic composite cone, dating late pleistocene period, between 10,000 , 15,000 years ago, rain ocean floor depth of between 300 , 400 meters, island has circular coastline of approximately 52 kilometers in length. highest elevation mount mihara (三原山, mihara-san) active volcano height of 758 meters. mountain has been recorded have erupted numerous times throughout history, , mentioned far nara period written records.


major eruptions occurred in 1965 , 1986, each forcing temporary evacuation of inhabitants. last recorded eruption in 1990.
