the precursor of market canton bazaar, established in 1842 on queen s road central between cochrane street , graham street. in 1843 known middle bazaar. chinese population later forced relocate central tai ping shan area due series of fires. market replaced residential houses europeans. bazaar moved queensway, present-day high court stands. housed chinese furniture dealers, joiners, cabinet makers , curio shops. due proximity of naval yard , construction of cantonment, bazaar, shops , civil tenement had moved. in 1850s, moved current location on des voeux road (then known praya). name changed central market (中環街市).


the market rebuilt in 1858, replaced western marble structure in 1895. rebuilt market three-storey victorian-style structure tower in middle.


the market demolished again in 1937, time replaced bauhaus structure. construction completed in 1938, , cost hk$900,000. market re-opened on 1 may 1939.


during japanese occupation of hong kong between 1941 , 1945, chinese name of market changed 中環街市 (chung wan kai shi) 中央市場 (chung yeung shi cheung). chinese name displayed @ des voeux road central entrance not restored until 1993. central market biggest meat market in southeast asia , then-governor of hong kong david trench made visit market in 1967. importance of market attracted governor alexander grantham pay visit.


in 1994, western part of second floor converted central escalator link alley shopping arcade, access way between central elevated walkway , central–mid-levels escalators. managed urban council until dissolution in 1999. market closed in march 2003.
