luckily, princess ozma , royal court of oz, (many of whom appeared in 2 previous oz books) happen cross on deadly desert on mission free royal family nome king. upon arriving, ozma takes charge , has dorothy, billina , tik-tok released langwidere s custody. cheerful reunions ensue scarecrow, tin woodman, , cowardly lion, , new introductions made ozma , hungry tiger, massive tiger desires eat fat babies, prevented doing conscience.


the expedition journeys underground kingdom of nomes, nome king reveals has magically transformed royal family decor ornaments. when ozma asks him release them, offers bargain: oz people may enter chambers , try guess of nome king s many ornaments are, if fail guess correctly, become ornaments themselves. ozma, twenty-seven soldiers of royal army of oz, including scarecrow, tin woodman, , tik-tok suffer bizarre fate. dorothy escapes luckily touching purple ornament in 1 of guesses. when guests oz retire 1 night, billina sleeps under king s throne , overhears king telling chief steward how 1 can tell of ornaments once people. learns king s magic powers reside in magic belt wears.


billina not going allowed guess, infuriates nome king laying egg under throne (eggs poison nomes) orders take chances of being transformed guessing. since knows secret of transformations, of guesses turn out right. enraged nome king refuses honor promise let oz people , ev royal family go; commands army recapture of them force. scarecrow throws 2 of billina s eggs, had luckily kept, nome king s face. while king blinded egg in eyes, dorothy takes magic belt , uses power rout army.


after returning royal family of ev (the queen mother, 5 boys, , 5 girls) rightful forms , place, ozma, dorothy, , others return country of oz great victory celebration held in emerald city s royal palace. dorothy officially made princess of oz, billina elects remain in oz, , ozma uses magic belt send dorothy australia happily reunited uncle henry.
