Construction Monument to the Battle of the Nations

in 1814 proposals build monument commemorate battle made. among supporters of project, author ernst moritz arndt called construction of large , magnificent (monument), colossus, pyramid, or cathedral of cologne . architect friedrich weinbrenner created design monument not used.


in 1863, commemorating 50th anniversary of battle, foundation stone placed, memorial not built. clemens thieme, member of verein für die geschichte leipzigs (association history of leipzig) learned during meeting of association past plans build monument. interested in resuming project, thieme, member of apollo masonic lodge, proposed project during meeting , gained support of fellow masons. in 1894, founded deutsche patriotenbund (association of german patriots) raised, means of donations , lottery, funds necessary construct monument 100th anniversary . following year, city of leipzig donated 40,000-square-metre (9.9-acre) site construction. project commissioned bruno schmitz, due previous works @ kyffhäuser. construction began in 1898. chosen construction site spot napoleon ordered retreat of army. thieme financed part of construction well, , complete dedication project, named honorary citizen of leipzig.


in 1898, construction started. 82,000 cubic metres (107,000 cu yd) of earth moved; 26,500 granite blocks used , project resulted in total cost of 6,000,000ℳ (54,541,810€ in 2017), monument finished in 1913. on 18th of october 1913 völkerschlachtdenkmal inaugurated in presence of 100 000 people including emperor wilhelm ii, , reigning sovereign rulers of german states.
