william o connor born in milwaukee, wisconsin, patrick dennis , ellen anna (née mccarthy) o connor. received education @ st. john cathedral school, , attended marquette university. studied priesthood @ st. francis seminary.

ordination , ministry

he ordained priest on march 10, 1912. first assignment assistant pastor of st. rose church in milwaukee, remained 4 years. during world war i, served chaplain 32nd infantry division; awarded croix de guerre medal bravery in action. furthered studies @ catholic university of america in washington, d.c., earning degree in 1920. taught philosophy @ st. francis seminary twenty years, , named pastor of st. thomas aquinas church in milwaukee in 1941. became president of american catholic philosophical association in 1939.

on december 27, 1941, pope pius xii appointed o connor bishop of superior diocese , consecrated on march 7, 1942.

on february 22, 1946, o connor appointed first bishop of newly created diocese of madison, pope pius xii.

on february 18, 1967, bishop o connor retired. died in madison, wisconsin.
