Career James Tallmadge Jr.
representative-elect henry b. lee died on september 16, 1816. in special election replace him, tallmadge elected democratic-republican fifteenth congress. served june 6, 1817, march 3, 1819. in house, defended general andrew jackson s course in seminole war.
his famous action in congress tallmadge amendment bill missouri statehood. have restricted slavery in missouri , provided future termination. read follows:
, provided, further introduction of slavery or involuntary servitude prohibited, except punishment of crimes, whereof party shall have been convicted; , children born within said state, after admission thereof union, shall free @ age of twenty-five years.
in support of amendment, on february 16, 1819, delivered powerful speech in opposition extension of slavery. speech circulated, , translated german. house adopted tallmadge amendment, senate rejected it.
later career
tallmadge declined run second term in house. continued practice of law in new york city, , took prominent role in civic affairs. delegate constitutional convention of 1821, member of new york state assembly in 1824, , lieutenant governor of new york 1825 1826.
in 1836, visited russia, , helped introduce country several american mechanical inventions, cotton-spinning machinery. delegate constitutional convention of 1846.
