tibbs born in king s county, ireland , graduate of trinity college, dublin. married evelyn mary livesey in england in 1904. tibbs rector of teigh 1925, preaching 72 people. during time parish priest, became subject of gossip , fell out several people, of whom started spread rumours fascist.


tibbs arrested on 8 july 1940 , sent liverpool prison. amongst people claimed fascist douglas bartlett, vicar of neighbouring parish, estranged friend of tibbs. claimed tibbs once hid 2 members of gestapo in rectory , conveying nazi views parishioners had developed defeatist theme describing losses made enemy on our naval forces of far more serious character disclosed british official reports. bartlett alleged tibbs said (bartlett s) children hitler , goering finest men in world .


other people claimed tibbs said winston churchill was, drug addict , dictator of vilest kind, in fact worst dictator in world , in pay of american jews. accused of saying germany our natural friend , had taken interest in local aerodromes , tibbs substitutes edward, duke of windsor name of king.


when interrogated, tibbs admitted in 1935 had been member of british union of fascists, because of party s agricultural policy. son, john dudley montague tibbs, amateur boxer, in buf, tibbs claimed joined because of uniform. dudley tibbs detained. tibbs denied had been hosting members of gestapo, praised hitler or called churchill drug addict. said local people found gaping @ planes @ raf cottesmore , claimed mentioned duke of windsor because, thought wanted praying as else.


on 19 august restrictions against tibbs revoked after appealed. claimed being irishman , being loquacious , eloquent , tibbs let tongue run away him . original detention felt justified. tibbs returned teigh never recovered imprisonment. during time in prison caught pneumonia , said have destroyed life of innocent man. conducted last service on 31 january 1943 , buried ten days later.


it believed tibbs detained unnecessarily, of evidence against him being gossip.
