work

from 1983 until 1990, gómez-peña lived in san diego/tijuana border region. of artistic , intellectual work concerns interface between north , south (mexico , u.s.), border culture , politics of brown body. original interdisciplinary arts projects , books explore borders, physical, cultural , otherwise, between 2 countries , between mainstream u.s. , various latino cultures: u.s.-mexico border itself, immigration, cross-cultural , hybrid identities, , confrontation , misunderstandings between cultures, languages , races. gómez-peña founding member of border arts workshop/taller de arte fronterizo, international arts collective based @ centro cultural de la raza in san diego.

gómez-peña traveled internationally 2 years fellow artist coco fusco performing year of white bear , 2 undiscovered amerindians visit west (1992–1994), satirical performance piece in 2 artists exhibited in cage in museums , @ arts festivals authentic amerindians undiscovered island off mexican coast. pair dressed in hodgepodge of ethnic drag , bits of americana such baseball cap , grass skirt in case of fusco, , face paint , leopard-skin wrestling mask gómez-peña. coco fusco described piece satirical commentary both on quincentenary celebrations , on history of practice of exhibiting human beings africa, asia, , latin america in europe , united states in zoos, theaters, , museums. during run, critically acclaimed piece performed @ major museums , arts festivals in new york, washington, dc, los angeles, chicago , madrid, spain, amongst others.
