black played high school basketball cardinal gibbons school in baltimore graduated in 1975. [1] played saint joseph s college in pennsylvania 1975–1979, averaging 17 points per game in playing career. black later played in continental basketball association 1979-1982 lancaster red roses , philadelphia kings. played detroit pistons in national basketball association, played 3 games in 1980-81 season, averaging 2.7 points per game.

pba career

in 2004, black hired ateneo blue eagles team consultant. after disappointing 2004 season, in blue eagles finished third under sandy arespacochaga, school officials hired him blue eagles new head coach 2005 campaign, 35th coach in history.

he led blue eagles 10-4 win-loss record in first season, eliminated de la salle green archers, had twice beat advantage against them.

in 69th season, led blue eagles 10-2 win-loss slate, best record in elimination round. after defeating adamson falcons in final four, ateneo battled ust growling tigers in grueling 3 game series. black designed play in game 1 victory. play long inbound pass macky escalona found wide-open kramer underneath basket victory. however, despite historic game 1 victory, unable win championship. lost tigers in game 2 large margin, , in game 3 in overtime.

in 2007, during uaap s 70th season, in spite of lack of talent, led eagles 9-5 standing. however, blue eagles still lost in crucial games; unable secure no. 2 seed due loss nu bulldogs, , lost returning de la salle green archers in battle no. 2 seed, have given them twice beat advantage had won. instead, settled no. 3 seed, , able eliminate defending champions ust growling tigers. blue eagles forced do-or-die game against la salle in semifinals lost.

later year, coached blue eagles winning 2007 collegiate champions league national basketball title, defeated university of visayas green lancers.

in 2008, season 71 of uaap, led blue eagles 13-1 elimination round record, , won championship on defending champions la salle sweeping series ateneo winning, 69-61 in game 1, and, 62-51 in game 2.this ateneo s first uaap title since winning in 2002 . months later, coached blue eagles championship in annual philippine university games, defeating eac generals.

in 2009, coached blue eagles 3 titles. in uaap season 72, blue eagles won second straight uaap men s basketball championship, won against ue red warriors, , again 13-1 win loss record. followed back-to-back titles in university games, time won against st. francis of assisi college. third title blue eagles second national championship under tutelage in 2009 philippine collegiate championship, successor collegiate champions league, defeated feu tamaraws

in 2010, won first three-peat coach ateneo blue eagles uaap season 73, duplicating grand slam feat when coach san miguel beermen in 1989. led blue eagles 10-4 win-loss record in eliminations (good solo 2nd place , last twice-to-beat advantage), victory on adamson falcons in semifinals, , sweep of feu tamaraws in finals, 72-49 blowout victory in game 1 , 65-62 title-clinching victory in game 2 (in eagles threatened throughout game). later year, coached blue eagles winning 2010 philippine collegiate championship title, time against adamson falcons, earning team third national championship under tutelage.

after winning 5 straight titles ateneo, black returned coaching in pba, star-studded talk n text tropang texters. while coaching texters, became latest member of 500-win coaching club. guided texters third-straight all-filipino crown 2012-13 pba season.

meralco bolts (2014-present)

in 2014, teams under mvp group reshuffles coaching staff. black assigned coach meralco bolts, while jong uichico replaced him head coach talk n text. in first conference bolts in 2014-15 philippine cup, team clinched top 6 in eliminations 6-5 win-loss record. entered quarterfinals sixth seed twice-to-beat advantage on purefoods , dethroned defending champions in process. few days after, bolts lost alaska in knockout round.

on 2016 governors cup finals, black returned championship series once again , led meralco first finals appearance face barangay ginebra san miguel led winningest coach, tim cone loss barangay ginebra in game 6.
