to demonstrate there still support big-league ball in milwaukee, selig s group contracted chicago white sox owner arthur allyn host 9 white sox home games @ milwaukee county stadium in 1968. 1967 exhibition game between white sox , minnesota twins had attracted more 51,000 spectators, , selig convinced strong milwaukee fan base demonstrate city provide home new club.


the experiment staggeringly successful – 9 games drew 264,297 fans. in chicago season, sox drew 539,478 fans remaining 58 home games. in handful of games, milwaukee crowds accounted one-third of total attendance @ white sox games. in light of success, selig , allyn agreed county stadium host sox home games again next season.


in 1969, sox schedule in milwaukee expanded include 11 home games (one against every other franchise in american league @ time). although games attended fewer fans (198,211 fans, average of 18,019) represented greater percentage of total white sox attendance previous year – on one-third of fans went sox home games in 1969 did @ county stadium (in remaining 59 home dates in chicago, sox drew 391,335 average of 6,632 per game). selig felt fan support lent legitimacy quest milwaukee franchise, , went 1968 owners meetings high hopes.


those hopes dashed when national league franchises awarded san diego (the padres) , montreal (the expos), , american league franchises awarded kansas city (the royals) , seattle (the pilots). last franchise, however, figure prominently in selig s future.
