for 53 years, acc employed double round-robin schedule in regular season, in each team played others twice season. expansion 12 teams 2005–2006 season, acc schedule no longer accommodate format. in new scheduling format agreed to, each team assigned 2 permanent partners , 9 rotating partners on three-year period. teams played permanent partners in home-and-away series each year. rotating partners split 3 groups: 3 teams played in home-and-away series, 3 teams played @ home, , 3 teams played on road. rotating partner groups rotated team play each permanent partner 6 times, , each rotating partner 4 times, on three-year period.


for 2012–13 season, 12-team in-conference schedule expanded 18. 2013–14 season, expanded 14-team, 18-game schedule consist of home , away game primary partner while remaining conference opponents have rotated in groups of three: 1 year both home , away, 1 year @ home only, , 1 year away only. however, when notre dame added 2013–14 season, 15-team, 18-game schedule modified each school played 2 partners home , away annually, 2 home , away, 5 home, , other 5 away. in 2013–14, after 1 year @ 18 games, women s basketball went 16-game schedule each team plays 2 teams twice, rotating opponents each year on 7 years , has no permanent partners.


the acc , big ten conference have held acc–big ten challenge each season since 1999. competition series of regular-season games pitting acc , big ten teams against each other. each team typically plays 1 challenge game each season, except few teams larger conference left out due unequal conference sizes. first acc–big ten women s challenge played in 2007, , has same format men s challenge.
