1980

the eagles defeated cowboys in 1980 nfc championship game , earned first super bowl appearance.



in 1980, team, led coach dick vermeil, quarterback ron jaworski, running wilbert montgomery, wide receiver harold carmichael, , linebacker bill bergey, dominated nfc, facing chief nemesis, dallas cowboys, in nfc championship. game played in cold conditions in front of birds faithful fans @ veterans stadium. led incredible rushing performance montgomery, long cutback td run in first half surely 1 of memorable plays in eagles history, , gutsy performance fullback leroy harris, scored eagles other td day, birds earned berth in super bowl xv 20-7 victory.


the eagles traveled new orleans super bowl xv , heavy favorites knock off oakland raiders, merely wild card team. things did not go eagles way, beginning disastrous decision tose bring comedian don rickles pregame locker room lighten mood. jaworski s first pass intercepted rod martin, setting oakland touchdown. later in first quarter, potential game-tying 40-yard touchdown pass rodney parker nullified illegal motion penalty. final score 27-10. veteran journeyman quarterback jim plunkett named game s mvp. in bizarre coincidence, joe kuharich died on same day.


1981-85

randall cunningham, here shown minnesota vikings, wore #12 , played eagles 1985-1995.


the eagles got off great start in 1981 season, winning first 6 games. ended 10-6 , earned wild card berth. however, unable repeat nfc champs when knocked out in wild card round new york giants, 27-21. after eagles finished 3-6 in strike-shortened 1982 season, vermeil quit team, citing burnout. replaced defensive coordinator marion campbell, aka swamp fox. campbell had helped popularize bend-don t-break defensive strategy in 1970s. under campbell, however, team struggled, although stewardship notable in saw arrival of all-time football greats reggie white , randall cunningham. 1983-85 seasons see eagles go 5-11, 6-9-1, , 7-9, respectively.


1986-88

campbell s reign of error ended in 1986, when buddy ryan named head coach. infusing team tough, hard-as-nails attitude, eagles became known tough defense , tougher personalities. ryan began rejuvenating team releasing several aging players, including ron jaworski. randall cunningham took place, , despite 5-10-1 season, began showing considerable promise. 1987 saw strike, reducing season 1 game. substitutes filling in strikers turned in poor performance, being crushed 41-22 dallas cowboys. after strike ended, regular eagles team won 37-20 revenge game against dallas. season record 7-8, 3 games having been played substitutes. eagles reach playoffs in 1988, lost chicago bears 20-12 in became known fog bowl , due weather conditions during game.


1989-90

the following 2 years see playoff appearances well, team not make past first round. failure frustrating many eagles fans, team commonly acknowledged among talented in nfl. on offense, eagles led quarterback cunningham, 1 of exciting players of generation; tight end keith jackson; , running keith byars. defense commonly acknowledged among greatest in league history, , best never win championship.


the 2 1989 matches dallas known bounty bowls. both won eagles (the cowboys finished 1-15 year), , marked ryan insulting new cowboys coach jimmy johnson, putting bounty on kicker, , eagles fans throwing snowballs on season ender.


on november 12, 1990, during monday night football game @ vet, eagles crushed washington redskins score of 28-14, defense scoring 3 of team s 4 touchdowns. more lopsided score indicate, game acquired sobriquet body bag game , attesting physical damage inflicted tougher eagles squad. eagles knocked out starting washington quarterback, , injured replacement well. running brian mitchell, later signed eagles, forced play quarterback redskins. unfortunately, redskins returned veterans stadium in first round of playoffs , defeated eagles 20-6, ending season. buddy ryan fired @ end of season. despite tough talk, eagles failed win playoff game in 5 years had been head coach.
