this bird reaches 23 centimetres (9.1 in) in length. frogmouths, species has wide , hooked bill slit-like nostrils , large head eyes facing forward provide wide field of binocular vision. compared others of genus has small wings, distinguished wing coverts ending in black spots tipped white. male gray-brown fine barring , spotted crown. males browner , more similar females. female more rufous or chestnut brown. indian female birds have fine black speckles on crown sri lankan females may lack or may have reduced markings. bird has short, stiff bristles in front of , surrounding eyes. western ghats population, ssp. roonwali (named after mithan lal roonwal), looks different. male has brownish-gray wing mirror , yellowish spots on undersides, compared gray or white in nominate sri lankan form. female has bright reddish-brown wing mirror , wings unspotted below.
