biography

he born in rural hamlet kaldewei, part of village of benninghausen, prussia, today suburbanized lippstadt, northrhine, westphalia, germany. parents caspar eickhoff (1803–1867) , maria catharina trockel (1803–1863) , forefathers peasants in hamlet kaldewei, born in serfdom cistercian cloister of benninghausen (founded in 1240, secularized in 1804), released serfdom grand duke in 1809.


after school education started work teacher in lippstadt , publicized radical writings in pre-revolutionary prussia until 1847. in 1847 decided emigrate united states , boarded ship itzstein & welcker sailing bremen on october 24, 1847 , arrived in new orleans on january 6, 1848.


he married louise elisa neuenschwander around 1855. immigrated switzerland united states. children henry eickhoff (january 17, 1856 – october 17, 1933) , 2 daughters. anthony eickhoff s grandson lawyer henry eickhoff, jr. (february 17, 1898 – august 12, 1954).


first profession , journalism (1848–1856)

his first employment deckhand on mississippi steamboat, later became teacher in jesuit school in st. louis , studied law. began work journalist, founder , editor of several german newspapers. in st. louis, missouri founder , editor of st. louis zeitung in 1848 , 1849. in dubuque, iowa edited der nordwestliche demokrat, later named iowa staatszeitung, 1849 1850. in louisville, kentucky der beobachter ohio, edited 1850–1852. settled in new york city: edited die abendpost in 1852 , new yorker staats-zeitung 1854 1856. became naturalized in 1855 , practiced law.


serving new york state, congress , treasury department (1863–1889)

during civil war served commissary general of subsistence state of new york troops, appointed in 1863. in 1864 elected new york state legislature. in 1876 elected democrat 45th congress representative of 7th district of new york (march 4, 1877 – march 3, 1879), unsuccessful candidate in re-election 46th congress in 1878. later fifth auditor in united states treasury department august 1, 1885 may 17, 1889.


serving new york city municipality official 1889–1901

in 1874 elected coroner of new york city until 1876. became fire commissioner of new york city in 1889, re-appointed until 1896 , served auditor of new york city fire department 1898 until death in 1901.


he died on november 5, 1901 in new york city , buried in green-wood cemetery.
