in 1920s, university of pittsburgh dean thyrsa amos saw need society outstanding sophomore women. on 7 november 1922, twelve sophomore women responded invitations , met @ heinz house, electing found society sponsor activities freshmen , sophomore women , select membership in spring freshman women displayed finest pitt spirit, showed scholarship , expressed interest in activities through fine participation in them . society named cwens, word cwēn, meaning lady or queen in anglo-saxon. emblem selected golden crown resting upon sceptre.
soon afterwards, beta , gamma chapters founded @ miami university , university of missouri, first society of cwens conference held in may 1925 on miami campus. charter obtained certify cwens national organization; petition submitted, , on 16 june 1926, certificate of incorporation approved , charter of national society of cwens recorded in common pleas court of allegheny county. titles of officers in organization given anglo-saxon names, , national convention (called witan) held twice annually, rotating among colleges , universities having cwen chapters. society s publication called tid.
the 1972 witan, held in pittsburgh on campus of duquesne university, observed fiftieth anniversary of society , climaxed in feast in cathedral of learning @ university of pittsburgh. ceremony, detailed in book of rituals (the hydan-bok), revered event in history of organization.

however, in 1975, title ix education amendments mandated abolishment of single-sex organizations in institutions of higher learning. in october 1975, cwens chapter presidents gave authority national executive board disband society , formulate plans national sophomore honor society both men , women. national board disbanded national society of cwens, founding lambda sigma society direct descendant on 6 march 1976. society of cwens s goal of fostering leadership, scholarship, fellowship, , service remain same in child organization.
