at 2013 county council elections conservative party retained overall control of council, majority fell twenty-two 4 councillors. ukip, labour , liberal democrats each won 9 seats. of 3 second-placed parties won 9 seats, ukip gained largest share of county-wide vote, more 10% ahead of labour. liberal democrats remain official opposition, despite winning fewer votes. green party gained 2 seats on council, despite overall share of vote falling. independent loughton residents association , canvey island independent party both returned 1 member , independent candidate elected.


the 2017 county council elections saw county-wide wipeout of ukip. conservative party profited loss, regaining many of seats had lost @ previous election. labour, despite slight rise in share of vote, returned fewer councillors. liberal democrats saw notable revival, unable translate seats. conservatives retained firm control of council. next election in 2021.


the county of essex divided 12 district , borough councils 2 unitary authorities (southend on sea , thurrock). 12 councils manage housing, local planning, refuse collection, street cleaning, elections , meet in respective civic offices. local representatives elected in parts in local elections, held every year.


with regard 2 unitary authorities, county council not used conduct business, works closely unitary authorities deliver “best value service” residents.



youth councils

the essex county council has youth assembly, 75 members aged between 11 , 19 aim represent young people in districts across essex. decide on priorities young people , campaign make difference. this, district , unitary authorities may have own youth councils, such epping forest, uttlesford , harlow.


all these councilors elected schools. elections young essex assembly occur in respective schools in candidates standing, likewise youth councils @ district , unitary level. these young people go on represent school , parish/ward or (in case of young essex assembly) entire district.


the initiative seeks engage younger people in county , rely on youth councilors of status work closely schools , youth centers improve youth services in essex , promote opinions of essex youth generation.
