in 1900, gifford pinchot, oversaw newly implemented division of forestry in department of agriculture, donated money yale university begin 1 of nation s first forestry schools. hearing of development, teenaged leopold decided on forestry vocation. parents agreed let him attend lawrenceville school, preparatory college in new jersey, improve chances of admission yale. burlington high school principal wrote in reference letter headmaster @ lawrenceville leopold earnest boy have in school... painstaking in work.... moral character above reproach. arrived @ new school in january 1904, shortly before turned 17. considered attentive student, although again drawn outdoors. lawrenceville suitably rural, , leopold spent time mapping area , studying wildlife. leopold studied @ lawrenceville school year, during time accepted yale. because yale school of forestry granted graduate degrees, first enrolled in sheffield scientific school s preparatory forestry courses undergraduate studies. while leopold able explore woods , fields of lawrenceville daily, detriment of studying, @ yale had little opportunity so; studies , social life engagements made outdoor trips few , far between.
