history

san ysidro named san ysidro labrador (saint isidore), patron saint of farmers.


little landers

the little landers colony community founded william ellsworth smythe in 1908 motto, little land , living surely better desperate struggle , wealth possibly. each member of community held plot of land no bigger cultivate themselves, averaging 2 acres (8,100 m) each, in order foster non-hierarchical social structure. every person had equal voice in affairs of community business affairs conducted board of directors voted in community. agricultural buying , selling pooled on cooperative basis. members agreed forfeit land should leave community.


the city levied commission on sale of land funded public improvements such library, park, irrigation systems, , clubhouse. maintained retail market in san diego harvested produce sold. in addition growing vegetables, community raised , marketed ducks, rabbits, , goats.


the little landers community known 1 of nation s first communes. lasted until major flood wiped out farms in 1916.


annexation

san ysidro, along rest of south san diego, annexed city of san diego in 1957; attempt residents in 1973 reverse decision unsuccessful.


1984 massacre

on july 18, 1984, james oliver huberty, 41-year-old former welder canton, ohio, opened fire inside mcdonald s restaurant multiple firearms, killing 21 people , injuring additional 19 people, before fatally shot sniper swat team. mcdonald s site razed in 1985. site home southwestern college satellite campus.
