biography
early life

richard addinsell born in woburn square, london, william arthur addinsell, chartered accountant, , wife, annie beatrice richards. younger of 2 brothers, addinsell educated @ home before attending hertford college, oxford, study law went down after 18 months. became interested in music.

early career

in 1925, enrolled @ royal college of music lasted 2 terms before leaving, again without obtaining formal qualification. time addinsell collaborating noel gay, among others, in andré charlot revue. more work charlot in 1927 followed in 1928 collaboration clemence dane on adam s opera @ old vic. in 1929, completed informal education touring europe visit major theatrical , musical centres such berlin , vienna.

in 1932, clemence dane, wrote incidental music broadway adaptation of alice in wonderland eva le gallienne, starring josephine hutchinson (produced 1933). in 1947 revived, starring bambi linn.

career in film composition

the warsaw concerto written 1941 film dangerous moonlight, , continues popular concert , recording piece. film-makers wanted in style of sergei rachmaninoff, unable persuade rachmaninoff himself write piece. roy douglas orchestrated concerto. has been recorded on 1 hundred times , has sold in excess of 3 million copies.

addinsell wrote short orchestral piece southern rhapsody, played every morning @ start of tv broadcasts former southern television company in south of england 1958 1981.

as common film music until 1950s, many of addinsell s scores destroyed studios assumed there no further interest in them. however, recordings of film music have been issued since death, reconstructed musicologist , composer philip lane soundtracks of films , conducted kenneth alwyn or rumon gamba.

later career

he collaborated 1942 joyce grenfell west end revues (including tuppence coloured , penny plain) , one-woman shows. addinsell s music in english light music style. regularly composed @ piano, providing other creative musicians such roy douglas, leonard isaacs or douglas gamley broad indications full orchestrations.
