the wash, 5%–7% alcohol, distilled in copper pot stills, boosting alcohol content 60%–80%.


the wash distilled. wash heated, boiling off alcohol, has lower boiling point water; vapour collected , cooled condense liquid form.


scottish regulations require single malts distilled in pot stills. in other jurisdictions, column stills may used.


the initial distilled spirit produced pot still, known low wine has alcohol content of 20 40%. low wines pumped second still, known spirit still, , distilled second (and third) time. final spirit, called new make spirit , has alcohol content of 60 70%.
