jingshan s history dates liao , jin dynasties, thousand years ago. 45.7-meter (150 ft) high artificial hill constructed in yongle era of ming dynasty entirely soil excavated in forming moats of imperial palace , nearby canals. impressive when 1 considers of material moved manual labor , animal power. jingshan consists of 5 individual peaks, , on top of each peak there lies elaborate pavilion. these pavilions used officials gathering , leisure purposes. these 5 peaks draw approximate historical axis of central beijing.


the dictates of feng shui long praised tombs , residences sited south of nearby hill, serving channel both harmful yin , cold northern winds. jingshan serving purpose, gained name feng shui hill. known locals coal hill, old rumor emperors kept hidden stash in park.


the chongzhen emperor, last ruler of ming dynasty, committed suicide hanging himself tree in jingshan in 1644 after beijing fell li zicheng s rebel forces.
