newberry college has diverse line-up in men s , women s sports including baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, football, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball, , wrestling. college member of national collegiate athletic association (ncaa) division ii , south atlantic conference (sac). school famous being on losing end of tilt against furman university, in frank selvy scored 100 points.


newberry s football team won first south atlantic conference championship in 2006 season. team finished 10–1 record in regular season, losing in last game ever against rival, presbyterian college. team won first-round game in first ever post season appearance in division ii football.


in august 2005, newberry college placed on watch list national collegiate athletic association (ncaa), along 17 other schools, deemed use of indians hostile , abusive, , prohibited use of native american nicknames, mascots , imagery in postseason competition. in september 2005, newberry college appealed removed list of schools declared unable host postseason play on basis none of institution s uses of indians hostile and/or abusive toward native americans. next month, ncaa rejected newberry s appeal. on may 7, 2008 newberry s athletic department officially retired nickname indians of school s 15 ncaa athletic teams. college used block n logo newberry college s athletic teams until june 7, 2010 when newberry s athletic director, brad edwards, announced school had decided on new nickname athletic teams. effective day, newberry college athletic teams (men s , women s) known wolves.
