at turn of century, 2 or 3 synagogues established in or on fringe of area called lower hill district. 1 old building near elm street (called old jewish church people) demolished , replaced. group called beth hamedrash hagodol-beth jacob congregation meets in new synagogue. @ least 1 old building has survived on nearby miller street in area had @ 1 time been called colloquialism jews hill christians worship there now.
