on leaving royal navy in 1992 allan enrolled on music technology course @ stow college in glasgow. here met long-time friend , collaborator, mark brown. allan , brown formed band called bodies, included allan s older brother, jd allan, , james clifford. brown , clifford later go on join cosmic rough riders. during 1990s bodies performed alongside other notable scottish acts of period including urusei yatsura, yummy fur , glass onion (who later change name travis). bodies made regular appearances @ kazoo club hosted alex kapranos.

in 1994 allan departed bodies form caffeine cake orchestra ray alexander, malcolm scott mearns , del frame (later replaced alasdair fisher). bodies continued briefly, bringing in stephen fleming replace allan on lead guitar. fleming go on form cosmic rough riders daniel wylie. in 1995 allan joined in caffeine cake orchestra brother, jd allan. until summer of 1997 caffeine cake orchestra gigged extensively in , around scotland, including performances alongside mogwai, dawn of replicants , black iron skyline (who later change name bis), , live television appearance on stv music programme vj s.

toward end of 1998 allan, alexander , jd allan began rehearsing mark brown, gary craig , saxophonist carol mcbay. constitute original line of blimp. in spring of 2000 brown departed join cosmic rough riders. george berry brought in replace him after. berry , craig former members of rust, included gordon garrow , kenny mcleod, subsequently of eska (band). @ beginning of 2001 carol mcbay relocated london , departed band. in spring of 2001 blimp began recording first of several sessions engineer , producer duncan cameron, released debut album, square go, following year.

in summer of 2001 blimp released debut single bad bitch dog don t bite on london based independent label stuntman recordings. single subsequently banned radio airplay across capital. reason stated gratuitous use of word bitch in lyrics, despite song being dog. allan s uncompromising lyrical style , use of glaswegian vernacular continue pose problems broadcasters throughout career.

on 13 july 2002 blimp hosted , curated j in dark event in glasgow counter t in park festival happening same weekend in balado, perth , kinross. although event intended snub festival s perceived commercialism band criticised apparent reference drug use event s title implied.

in autumn of 2003 blimp asked support sensational alex harvey band @ renowned glasgow venue, king tut s wah wah hut. support band again on nationwide tour in 2005. blimp supported many other acts including misty s big adventure, ten benson , toby jepson, , supported acts went on become more known, including law , glasvegas. in winter of 2007 blimp began work on last studio album, easy listening high commissioner. released in summer of same year, album s closing number, plastic fuck machine , deemed unplayable radio stations, due in part song s title because of george berry s effect laden drum solo dominates track. blimp made final live appearance @ nice n sleazy in glasgow on 14 july 2007.
