killingworth home number of pits including world-famous killingworth colliery. in 1814 george stephenson, enginewright @ colliery, built first locomotive blücher , encouragement of manager, nicholas wood, in colliery workshop behind house dial cottage on lime road. locomotive haul 30 tons of coal hill @ 4 mph (6.4 km/h). used tow coal wagons along wagonway killingworth wallsend coal staithes. although blücher did not survive long, provided stephenson knowledge , experience build better locomotives use both @ killingworth , elsewhere. later build famous rocket in locomotive works in newcastle.
at same time stephenson developing own version of miner s safety lamp, demonstrated underground in killingworth pit month before sir humphry davy presented design royal society in london in 1815. known geordie lamp used in north-east in place of davy lamp.
the gauge of killingworth tramway 1,422 mm (4 ft 8 in).
