empire theatres formed sobey family s purchase of atlantic canadian assets of canadian odeon theatres in 1984 part of chain s merger cineplex odeon corporation (now cineplex entertainment).later, acquired selected famous players theatres locations, including in newfoundland , labrador.
throughout 1980s , 1990s, famous players remained major competitor in maritimes. empire responded opening several new or replacement locations along lines of multiplexes being opened cineplex , famous players in rest of canada.
despite aggressive expansion in maritimes in mid-1990s, famous players had focused on improvements elsewhere , did not match empire s moves, 1 of included 18-screen (including 1 imax screen) multiplex in bayers lake business park in suburban halifax. comparably minor interests in region, famous players cut on marketing , sold remaining screens in atlantic canada empire theatres in 2004.
expansion western canada
on august 22, 2005, empire announced acquire 27 theatres, total of 202 screens, in locations british columbia ontario, cineplex galaxy lp, result of latter s acquisition of famous players theatres, doubling empire s size. of locations traditional venues, larger theatres, such coliseum calgary,silvercity theatres in kitchener , st. catharines, ontario, 1 in calgary, alberta,and cineplex odeon square 1 in mississauga. deal closed september 30, 2005.
in december 2009, empire theatres chain had 48 screens equipped digital projection , reald 3d capabilities.in march 2012, empire announced first national exhibitor in canada complete circuit wide digital cinema conversion , 359 screens converted, 40 percent of had reald 3d capability.
on june 21, 2012, empire announced acquisition of 2 ontario-based theatres amc theatres, located in ottawa, ontario , whitby, ontario. each theatre featured 24 screens, including imax experience auditorium. empire had announced plans equip screens in these locations barco digital technology, , reald 3d technology, provide movie-goers state-of-the-art movie presentation experience .

on june 27, 2013, empire company ltd. announced focusing on retail , real estate operations (including sobeys, earlier in month had agreed purchase safeway s canadian operations). end, empire theatres wound down operations , sold or closed of theatres.
the lansdowne location empire theatres announced in 2011 acquired cineplex in 2014 , opened in 2015.
cineplex entertainment purchased 24 theatres approximately c$194 million on october 10, 2013. consisted of empire locations in atlantic canada. on october 22, 2013, empire theatres closed atlantic canada locations after evening shows. atlantic canada theatres sale cineplex completed on october 24, 2013. on october 24 or 25, 2013, theatres reopened cineplex cinemas. deal include 2 former amc locations in ottawa , whitby, these later removed deal due competition bureau concerns. in lieu of kanata location, cineplex later acquired rights empire s planned 10-screen lansdowne park location in ottawa.
landmark cinemas purchased 23 theatres in ontario , western canada c$55 million. minority equity share , management control of theatres, later financed triwest capital partners. on october 29, 2013, empire theatres closed ontario , western canada locations after evening shows , reopened on october 31, 2013 landmark cinemas.on october 30, 2013, empire theatres terminated operations permanently. sale landmark cinemas closed on october 31, 2013.the ottawa 7 theatre run on management contract until december 29, 2013 when closed.
on november 1, 2013, empire company ltd. announced completion of sale of empire theatres cineplex & landmark.
