in 2013, stefanik declared candidacy in 2014 election united states house of representatives in new york s 21st congressional district. district , predecessors had been in republican hands 136 years before democrat bill owens won 2009 special election , subsequently won re-election in 2010 , 2012. in 2014, owens opted not seek reelection following re-districting.


stefanik defeated matt doheny in republican primary election 61 39 percent, faced aaron woolf, democratic party nominee, , matt funiciello, green party nominee, in general election on november 4. stefanik defeated woolf , funiciello 55.2% 33.5% , 10.6% respectively, becoming youngest woman ever elected congress.


2016

stefanik ran re-election in 2016. ran unopposed in republican primary. stefanik supported donald trump president after won 2016 republican presidential primaries.


she faced democrat mike derrick , green party candidate matt funiciello in general election.


she won re-election 66%, while derrick (d) received 29% , funiciello (g) received 5% of vote.
