joseph l. bennett, came texas in 1834 , settled in area, joined texas army in 1836. captain of company of local volunteers, left area march 1, 1836, lead troops aid texan forces @ alamo. upon reaching colorado river learned of fall of alamo, , discontinued mission. joined sam houston s main army , elected lt. colonel of 2nd regiment of volunteers, company commanded @ battle of san jacinto. bennett received land grants in payment military service, , in 1837 president sam houston appointed him command frontier defense unit. elected montgomery county voters republic of texas congress, served 2 terms, 1838-1840. briefly resumed military service in 1842 member of somervell expedition against mexico. bennett active in local civic affairs, serving mail carrier houston montgomery county commissioner , supporter of area schools. moved family headright land grant in present navarro , freestone counties in 1848. died later year , buried in family graveyard near streetman.
