the belfast metropolitan area plan 2015 identifies need improve transport links george best belfast city airport city centre. bmap proposed light rail line city centre have interchanged new railway station @ tillysburn, serving both airport , holywood exchange retail development. however, in april 2008 decision taken not proceed light rail project, drd choosing implement new bus-based network. pressure group rail 21 has stated tillysburn proposal insufficient new station expected provide – link airport, transport provision holywood exchange , park , ride facility. instead proposes dedicated airport station, similar glasgow prestwick airport, connected directly terminal, tillysburn half mile away serving holywood exchange, instead of tillysburn providing link airport.


there have been calls, part of wider upgrade of rail route londonderry, railway station connecting city of derry airport, close railway line. however, government has determined number of passengers using airport not sufficient justify station.
