Sports Culture of the Isle of Man



the isle of man represented nation in commonwealth games , island games , hosted iv commonwealth youth games in 2011. manx sports people have won 3 golds @ commonwealth games, recent being mark cavendish, professional cyclist, in 2006 in scratch race. cavendish has had great success in cycling, having won twenty 5 stages of tour de france date , milan–san remo classic. island started island games in 1985, , hosted island games in 2001.


isle of man teams , individuals participate in many sports both on , off island including rugby union, football, gymnastics, hockey, netball, bowling , cricket. being island, many types of watersports popular residents.


motorcycle racing

the main international event associated island isle of man tourist trophy race, colloquially known tt , began in 1907. takes place in late may , june. tt international road racing event motorcycles, used part of world championship, , long considered 1 of greatest motorcycle sporting event of world”. taking place on two-week period, has become festival motorcycling culture, makes huge contribution island’s economy , has become part of manx identity. many, isle carries title road racing capital of world .


the manx grand prix separate motorcycle event amateurs , private entrants uses same 60.70 km (37.72 mi) snaefell mountain course in late august , september.
