in 1911, state legislature established new york state college of forestry @ syracuse university, not without opposition cornell university. in 1930, nys board of regents questioned need duplicate, state-supported forestry programs @ cornell , syracuse. formal study resulted in agreement in 1937 syracuse program place professional undergraduate training in forestry. cornell s department of forestry continued courses in farm forestry, cooperative extension work in forestry, , research , graduate education. in exchange, syracuse university agreed abandon school of agriculture. however, in 2000, suny system administration established esf s primacy among 64 suny campuses , contract colleges development of new undergraduate degree programs in environmental science , environmental studies, esf not have veto power on competing new programs.
