the riders divided 2 categories: national teams , touriste-routiers. there 4 big national teams 10 cyclists each: belgian team, german team, spanish/luxembourgian team , french team. there 5 small teams of 4 cyclists each: swiss team, dutch team, yugoslavian team, romanian team , austrian team. dutch, yugoslavian , romanian teams, first participation ever. italian team absent political reasons (the second italo-abyssinian war). italian team consisting of italians living in france had been allowed race , had jersey numbers designated, tour organisers changed minds.
