government house constructed between 1832 , 1834 viceregal residence lieutenant governor of british colony of prince edward island. land, parcel of 100 acres (0.40 km) known fanning bank or fanning s bank, in 1789 set aside lieutenant governor edmund fanning crown land, specific stipulation used site governor s residence. in 1873, approximately 10 acres (40,000 m) retained government house , grounds. 40 acres given city of charlottetown , later became victoria park.
government house designated national historic site of canada in 1971.
