Two-way tie for the division or wildcard Major League Baseball tie-breaking procedures



one-game tiebreakers played between teams tied division championship or league s second wildcard berth. these games played day after season scheduled end. home-field advantage determined using rules listed below ( breaking ties without playoff games ).


from implementation of wildcard in 1994 end of 2011 season, different rule in place. 2 teams tied division did not play tiebreaker if records better non-division winners in league. instead, such tie broken using rules listed below ( breaking ties without playoff games ). scenario happened in 2001 major league baseball season when houston astros , st. louis cardinals tied first place in national league central. astros awarded division title virtue of better head-to-head record against cardinals, while st. louis received wildcard berth.


with, however, adoption of second wildcard berth , wildcard game beginning in 2012 season, non-division winner best record in league faces possible elimination on first day of postseason. result, tie-breaking rules changed 2 teams tied division championship must play tie- breaking game if both teams have qualified postseason. team losing tie-breaking game qualify wildcard berth if regular-season record among league s 2 best records non-division-winners. if team tied second wild-card spot, second tie-breaking game played.


if, on other hand, 2 teams tied first wildcard slot, no tie-breaking game played. rather, 2 teams play against each other in wildcard game, home-field advantage awarded using tie-breaking rules described in next section.
