collins co-founded band nu-sonics in 1976 in glasgow suburb of bearsden. band changed name orange juice in 1979. collins , friend alan horne founded record label postcard records year release band s singles. band s debut single, falling , laughing issued in february 1980. although critically acclaimed, single sold 2,000 copies.
after 3 more singles postcard, orange juice signed polydor records in october 1981 , released debut album, can t hide love forever, in march 1982. band s second album, rip followed in november 1982. single rip , released in 1983, reached number 8 on uk singles chart , noted first british hit single feature bass-line roland tb-303 synthesizer. song top 40 single.
the band s 2 subsequent albums, texas fever , orange juice both released in 1984 , failed find same success rip up.
orange juice disbanded in january 1985, after polydor grew dissatisfied band s lack of success , band s difficulty finding new label sign with. during time in career, collins met grace maxwell, hired manager , later became wife.
collins started solo career in 1986, , signed elevation records, label co-venture between indie label creation records , major label warner music.
