the first tokyo sevens held in 1993, number of japan s top university teams , company teams competing. meiji university won cup in first year, , suntory following year, 1994.


in 1995, international tournament added. sponsored canterbury japan international sevens sportswear manufacturer canterbury of new zealand, national teams fiji , new zealand finalists on 5 occasions, fiji winning first 3 cups , new zealand next two.


the international tournament incorporated irb sevens world series tokyo international sevens in 2000 , 2001. further cup win each fiji , new zealand, respectively, recorded in 2 years. tokyo sevens replaced singapore sevens on world circuit 2002 season.


after decade-long interval, tokyo included in world sevens series again 2012 2015. preparatory international sevens tournament had been planned tokyo in 2011 had cancelled due earthquake , tsunami aftermath year.
