in second world war industrial importance made swansea target of german bombing, , of town centre destroyed during swansea blitz on 19, 20 , 21 february 1941 (the 3 nights blitz ).


in 1969 swansea granted city status mark prince charles s investiture prince of wales. prince made announcement on 3 july 1969 during tour of wales. swansea obtained further right have lord mayor in 1982.


within city centre ruins of castle, marina, glynn vivian art gallery, swansea museum, dylan thomas centre, environment centre, , market, largest covered market in wales.


it backs onto quadrant shopping centre, opened in 1978, , adjoining st david s centre opened in 1982. other notable modern buildings include bt tower (formerly gpo tower) built around 1970, alexandra house opened in 1976, county hall opened in july 1982. swansea leisure centre opened in 1977; has undergone extensive refurbishment retained elements of original structure , re-opened in march 2008.
