thandiswa s first attempt noticed occurred @ shell road fame talent show thandiswa did not make semi-finals round. did, however, catch eye of musician , producer don laka, arranged include in project working on. , began career in 1998 bongo maffin, 1 of pioneering bands of kwaito. became recognised voice of south africa s conscious youth, compositions consistently combining dance floor favourites thought-provoking lyrics. invited perform on world, , shared stage musical icons stevie wonder, marley clan, ladysmith black mambazo, chaka khan, sean paul, steel pulse , skunk anansie, among others. contribution south african musical cannon earned bongo maffin numerous awards, among them south african music awards, kora africa music awards, , metro fm music awards.


going solo: thandiswa

after 5 albums bongo maffin ventured onto solo career. first project, zabalaza (2004), reached double platinum status , won numerous awards, including kora award best african female , 4 south african music awards, including best album. nominated bbc radio 3 planet awards. second album, ibokwe (2009), reached gold status in first few weeks of release , live dvd, dance of forgotten free (2010), won best female artist , best live dvd in 2011. guardian has called south africa s finest female contemporary singer.


her music political , compositions include traditional xhosa rhythms, mbaqanga, reggae, kwaito , funk , jazz sounds.


thandiswa has performed on world @ venues, including @ 2010 fifa world cup opening ceremony, apollo in new york, womex, cannes film festival, midem, hackney empire, africa brazil festival, fespaco film festival, bbc world music awards , many mandela 46664 concerts. has several noteworthy collaborations. instance, collaborated on 2 songs musician meshell ndegeocello on album world has made me man of dreams, nominated grammy in 2007. @ home in south africa, thandiswa has collaborated illustrious musicians including hugh masekela, stimela, late busi mhlongo, , blk jks.


in july 2012 duetted paul simon in hyde park, london, in graceland album s 25th anniversary concert. sang female vocals on under african skies, sung linda ronstadt on graceland album.
