biography
early life
stephen roberts born in indianapolis, indiana on august 5, 1915. grew in hamburg, new york, father, dr james roberts, cornell graduate, veterinarian. roberts himself graduated cornell in 1938, trained veterinarian , served captain of polo team. married cornell graduated, betty jane harris, in 1938. moved manhattan, kansas, taught veterinary medicine , earned master of science.

he joined faculty @ cornell in 1942. became full professor in department of large animal medicine, obstetrics , surgery in 1946 , served chairman of department 1965 1966, , 1969 1972. served on judicial council of american veterinary medical association (avma) thirteen years, charter diplomate of american college of theriogenologists, associate editor of veterinary news, , provided years of service cornell veterinary alumni association. served intercollegiate polo coach @ cornell 1947 1972. implemented split strings intercollegiate polo, requiring home teams provide horses visitors didn t have bring theirs game.
vermont , retirement
in 1972, left cornell , moved woodstock, vermont, worked veterinarian brother, dr. james roberts. helped set quechee polo club in quechee, vermont. in 1993, married ruth webb shipman , began retirement in bath, new york. died of heart failure on january 21, 2005 in bath. had set doc roberts fund polo.
legacy
he received prestigious national borden award avma research on cattle disease, distinguished service award new york state veterinary medical society, , salmon award given cornell s august veterinary alumni. inducted cornell athletic hall of fame in 1990. inducted museum of polo , hall of fame in lake worth, florida on february 9, 1996.
