2016 Legislative Council election Localist groups (Hong Kong)




a day after 2016 new territories east by-election, 3 localist groups, wong yuk-man s proletariat political institute, wong yeung-tat s civic passion , chin wan s hong kong resurgence order, announced run in september legislative council election under alliance cp–ppi–hkro . on 10 april 2016. 6 localist groups youngspiration, kowloon east community, tin shui wai new force, cheung sha wan community establishment power, tsz wan shan constructive power , tuen mun community, formed electoral alliance under name allinhk planned field candidates in 4 of 5 geographical constituencies agenda put forward referendum on hong kong s self-determination, while hong kong indigenous , new pro-independence hong kong national party stated run in upcoming election. demosisto, left-leaning political party formed umbrella revolution leaders joshua wong, oscar lai of scholarism , nathan law of hong kong federation of students formed on same day. political party aimed field candidates in upcoming election platform of self-determination of hong kong future. allied veteran activist eddie chu rose fame in 2006 edinburgh place ferry pier protest , university lecturer lau siu-lai held class in occupation sites in 2014 occupy protest.


on 14 july 2016, electoral affairs commission (eac) announced plan require candidates sign additional confirmation form in nomination declare understanding of hong kong being inalienable part of china stipulated in basic law, in response many potential localist candidates advocating or promoting hong kong independence. after end of nomination period, 6 localist candidates received emails eac said nominations invalidated . new territories east constituency returning officer cora ho lai-sheung rejected leung s nomination on basis did not trust leung genuinely changed previous stance independence.


the localists scored great victory in election, winning 6 seats (excluding claudia mo) , securing of 19 per cent of vote share (excluding claudia mo , gary fan). occupy student leader nathan law of demosisto became youngest ever candidate elected, polytechnic university lecturer lau siu-lai , eddie chu, returned in geographical constituencies.
