as 1959, less 2 miles (3.2 km) of passageway had been discovered. year, however, herb , jan conn, local rock climbers, began exploring, , within 2 years had mapped 15 miles (24 km). of new discoveries lay outside boundaries of monument, under land managed united states forest service. 2 agencies performed land swap in 1965, establishing present boundaries of park, , enabling development of new part of cave. park service sunk 300 feet (91 m) elevator shaft remote cave area, , built concrete walks , metal stairs , platforms along one-half-mile loop. scenic tour opened in 1972. modern-day visitors tour part of cave.


in august 2000, 83,000 acres (340 km) forest fire burned 90% of monument , surrounding area. visitor center , historic buildings spared.
