unlike mayo, binnion consistent , strong supporter of college s athletics program. time etsnc became state institution in 1917, blue , gold had been adopted school colors, , in 1919 teams began using nickname lions . roy owens of tyler, played on intercollegiate teams, suggested pun on mayo s middle name, leonidas. during late 1910s , 1920s, etsnc fielded teams in football, men s basketball, women s basketball, , baseball, while school gained admission texas intercollegiate athletic association in 1922. in 1921, baseball team played chicago white sox in spring training game, losing score of 12 3.
