the roots of acc basketball began 2 men: everett case , frank mcguire. case accepted head coaching job @ north carolina state. case s north carolina state teams dominated years of acc modern, fast-paced style of play. became fastest college basketball coach reach many games won milestones. case became known father of acc basketball. despite success on court, may have been better promoter off-the-court. case realized need sell program , university. state started construction on reynolds coliseum in 1941. case persuaded school officials expand arena 12,400 people. opened new home court team in 1949; @ time, largest on-campus arena in south. such, used host site many southern conference tournaments, acc tournaments, , dixie classic. dixie classic brought in large revenues schools involved , became 1 of premier sporting events in south.


partly counter case s success, north carolina convinced frank mcguire come chapel hill in 1952. mcguire knew that, largely due case s influence, basketball major high school athletic event of region. not tapped growing market of high school talent in north carolina, brought several recruits home territory in new york city well. case , mcguire literally invented rivalry. both men realized benefits created through rivalry between them. brought more national attention both of programs , increased fan support on both sides.


after state slapped crippling ncaa sanctions before 1956–57 season, mcguire s north carolina team delivered acc first national championship. during tar heels championship run, greensboro entrepreneur castleman d. chesley noticed popularity generated. cobbled five-station television network broadcast final four. network began broadcasting regular season acc games following season—the ancestor of today s television package raycom sports. point on, acc basketball gained large popularity.


the acc has been home of many prominent basketball coaches besides case , mcguire, including terry holland , tony bennett of virginia; vic bubas , mike krzyzewski of duke; press maravich, norm sloan , jim valvano of north carolina state; dean smith , roy williams of north carolina; bones mckinney of wake forest; lefty driesell , gary williams of maryland; bobby cremins of georgia tech; jim boeheim of syracuse; , rick pitino of louisville.
