hugo weidel born in vienna in 1849. studied @ vienna university of technology heinrich hlasiwetz. later moved university of heidelberg, germany, , obtained phd degree there in 1870. after returning vienna, weidel became assistant of hlasiwetz in 1871. during time, started research on oxidation products of cinchonine , nicotine alkaloids. became lecturer @ university in 1874, and, after ludwig barth von barthenau became chair of department, weidel intensify research on alkaloids. although oxidation of nicotine known, weidel first isolate large enough amounts determine properties of material. work earned him lieben prize in 1880. in 1886, weidel became professor agricultural chemistry @ pedology institute in vienna. of time there occupied lecturing , educating students. after retirement of von barth in 1891, returned previous institute , assumed position of full professor. in 1890, weidel became member of austrian academy of sciences , in 1898 received decoration of iron crown of emperor of austria. without sign of illness, delivered lecture on morning of june 7, 1899, died after few hours heart problem.
