many rivers flowing sea of azov form bays, lagoons , limans. sand, silt , shells bring deposited in areas of reduced flow, sides of bays, forming narrow sandbanks called spits. typical maximum depth in bays , limans few metres. because of shallow waters , abundant rivers, spits remarkably long , numerous in sea – arabat spit stretches on 112 kilometres (70 mi) , 1 of world s longest spits; 3 other spits, fedotov spit, achuevsk spit , obitochna spit, longer 30 km. spits stretch north south , shape can change on several years.
a remarkable feature of sea of azov large complex of shallow lagoons called sivash or rotten sea . typical depth 0.5–1 metres maximum of 3 metres. cover area of 2,560 square kilometres (990 sq mi) in northeastern crimea separated sea arabatsk spit. north of spit lies city of henichesk (population 22,500) , south of bay of arabat. sivash accepts 1.5 km of azov water per year. because of lagoons wide extent , shallowness, water rapidly evaporates, resulting in high salinity of 170 on practical salinity scale (i.e. 170 psu). reason sivash has long had important salt-producing industry.

north of arabat spit molochna liman associated fedotov spit (45 km long) formed molochna river. farther north, between fedotov spit , obytochna spit (30 km long), lies obytochny bay. further north, between obytochna spit , berdyansk spit (23 km long), berdyansk bay 2 cities, berdyansk (population 112,000) , primorsk (population 13,900). further north again lies belosaraysk bay belosaraysk spit, formed river kalmius. major city in area mariupol (population 491,600). then, approaching taganrog bay , close taganrog, mius liman , krivaya spit formed mius river.
with area of 5,600 square kilometres (2,200 sq mi), taganrog bay largest bay of sea of azov. located in north-eastern part of sea , bounded belosaraysk , dolgaya spits. don flows north-east. on shores stand 2 principal cities of sea of azov, taganrog (population 257,600) , azov (population 83,200). south-east of bay yeysk liman. lies entirely on continent, entering taganrog bay through yeysk , glafirovsk spits, , mouth of yeya river. yeysk spit part of yeysk city, has population of 87,500. extends prominent yeysk peninsula, tipped in north-west dolgaya spit. south of it, enclosed continent, lies beisug liman, restricted yasensk spit , fed beysug river. south-west of liman, 31 km long achuevsk spit runs along coastline. between achuevsk spit , beisug liman stands primorsko-akhtarsk 32,165 inhabitants.

in south, sea of azov connected black sea via strait of kerch, bordered west kerch peninsula of crimea , east russian taman peninsula in krasnodar krai. city of kerch (population 151,300) located on kerch peninsula, , taman peninsula contains delta of kuban, major russian river. strait 41 kilometres long , 4 15 kilometres wide. narrowest part lies on sea of azov side, restricted chushka spit faces southwards in consequence of outflow azov black sea.
