clayton hall 15th-century hall on ashton new road, in manchester, hidden behind trees in small park. hall grade ii* listed building, scheduled ancient monument, , rare example of medieval moated site (grid reference sj88099857). built clayton family, passed on hands of byron family (of poet lord byron member) in 1194. lived there until sold 2 london merchants, george , humphrey chetham, in 1620. humphrey chetham famous founding chetham s school , library in centre of manchester.


during civil war, royalist cavalry stationed here, before attack on manchester. afterwards, according legend, oliver cromwell said have spent 3 nights @ hall. in 1897 building acquired manchester city corporation, ensuring survival.
