the lagomorphs comprise 2 families, leporidae (hares , rabbits), , ochotonidae (pikas). though can resemble rodents, , classified superfamily in order until 20th century, have since been considered separate order. differ rodents in number of physical characteristics, such having 4 incisors in upper jaw rather two. south america s meager lagomorph diversity (3 species compared 18 north america north of mexico) reflects recent arrival , failure (so far) diversify much. tapeti present south of northern south america; lagomorphs absent of south america s southern cone.
