the screen of west front (illustration) joy s design. consisting of 2 tiers of sculptures in canopies, covered original arches , contains chantry of bishop grandisson. first tier had sculptures of 25 angels, of 23 remain. second tier has niches 25 sculptures of kings , knights. ten sculptures dating 1340s survive today.


work on cathedral halted in 1348 black death, struck before christmas. joy not mentioned after date, 1 of victims of plague.
