Early life and family Elinor Mead Howells







elinor gertrude mead born on may 1, 1837 in chesterfield, new hampshire mary jane noyes , larkin goldsmith mead. family part of intellectual , social aristocracy of new england. brothers sculptor larkin goldsmith mead (born 1835) , architect william rutherford mead (born 1846). future president rutherford b. hayes cousin , oneida community founder john humphrey noyes uncle. graduated brattleboro high school in brattleboro, vermont.


during winter of 1860, mead travelled columbus stay laura platt, niece of hayes . met author william dean howells there. went london brother intent of marrying william. after learning week s residence required, pair travelled paris married on december 24, 1862.


their children winifred (b. 1863), architect john mead howells (b. 1868), , mildred (b. 1872). william howells held consulship in venice 1861 1865 , couple lived there. howells moved cambridge, massachusetts in 1866 , lived in house few blocks north of harvard university.
